What should I look for in a waterproof or water-resistant backpack?

I need a backpack that will keep my books dry while walking through torrential rain. What features should I look for?
What specific features makes one bag more water resistant than another?

It really depends on the size and distance your looking for. The Berghaus Freeflow 2/3 is an excellent choice if your looking for a small bag. Its a day sac hiking bag and has a water proof cover but for extreme rain it has a pull out cover which is designed to cover the bag whilst on your back. As an avid mountain biker I have to use the bags which really do protect whats inside and I Can say that a bag from Camel Back, Berghaus, Karimoor or the north face will be good and be as waterproof as a bag can be.

Where are some places where you could buy backpacking equipment or like outdoor things?

I would make sure that it’s waterproof, for a start.

First and foremost, make sure it is water tight…… then that its big enough to hold your books. Thats about it really

Don’t waste money on a waterproof backpack or a backpack for that matter - a couple of good strong plastic bags doubled up is fine. If ou are worried about carrying the weight of the books etc then use a rucksack you already have (place your books in a plastic bag) into the ruck sack.
    Save money.

I would buy a DRYSAC (this is not the name of the make it is the name of the product). Outdoor shops will sell them, I bought mine from Go Outdoors for less than a tenner. You put your dry stuff in the dry sac and then put your dry sac inside your back pack. They’re designed for dry clothing for people who do water sports such as rafting. When you see what it is you will know it works. I have succesfully waded across a river with the dry sac (which doubles as a bouyancy aid) and a friend has capsized a canoe with a dry sac. Back packs with water proof covers keep bulky rain off however due to the impossibilites of the design can not keep the contents 100% dry.
