I just stumbled upon this you tube video on outdoor backpack essential gear. The reason that i want to share it on the blog is because it shows some essential items that almost everybody uses or should at least bring along on every backpacking trip. The gear items are mainly basic stuff that most of you carry along but there are some great tips here especially for beginners in this video. To be honest, i learned some new things myself from this short video, hope you enjoy!

If you ever think about learning more about the outdoors and perfecting your outdoor backpack skills, think no more, take a class at NOLS. NOLS stands for National Outdoor Leadership School. It’s a non profit educational organization that teaches people of all ages technical outdoor skills, leadership and environmental ethics. And all this in “natures classroom”, meaning that their courses are given in nature itself around the world.

NOLS was founded in 1965 by mountaineer Paul Petzoldt. The courses that they offer range in length from 10 days to a full academic year and are pointed at people that want to learn how to lead. The way they try to accomplish that is the learn-by-doing approach that teaches students competence and responsibility that will last a lifetime. If you take a look at the website of NOLS you will find that they have a wide variety of courses to offer, all around the world. Just to name a few courses: Backpacking, mountaineering,rock climbing and wilderness medicine. Natures classrooms are located in the United States, Australia, South America,India and Scandinavia.

Some of the skills that are thought on these courses are leadership outdoor skills, learning to work effectively in a group and all of the technical skills that are required when you are out in the wilderness. These courses are given to you by highly experienced and motivated instructors with a love for the outdoors. There are many more things to see and learn from the NOLS website, you can visited them at NOLS.edu. I’ve embedded an introduction video from them below. If you want to learn how to become a leader, or take your outdoor backpack skills to a higher level, NOLS is certainly the place to find that.

As one of the students says in the video:“I wrote a letter home to my parents, trying to explain what I’ve been doing every day. I told them what we’ve been eating and where we’ve camped every day. I can describe all those things to my parents. What i struggled with was how to tell my parents what it meant for me to be able to do all these things.. and.. there are hardly words to describe what it’s like to wake up every day and think: something crazy cool is going to happen today!”

If you are planning to go to the beach, there is one item that you really should bring along, if only for your comfort: The backpack beach chair. Backpack beach chairs are becoming increasingly popular along people and for good reason. You always carry a backpack or a bag of some kind because you need to bring all kinds of stuff with you to survive your day at the beach. When you arrive at the beach and didn’t bring your chair or beachbed along you will probably hire one. With a backpack beach chair you have everything you need packed in one backpack.

The frame can be made out of aluminum, wood or a plastic fabric. Most of these materials can hold up to 250 pounds(be sure to check that).

Apart from it being a beach chair it is also a backpack. The chair folds up to a backpack frame. Most models have different sorts of compartments where you can store stuff like blankets, food/drink items and of course suncream.

The outdoor season is getting started, time to talk about some of the shops where we can buy our stuff! I will add more outdoor shops reviews in the weeks to come, but let’s start with the first great outdoors store in line: USoutdoor.com.

USoutdoor is a online shop where you can buy all sorts of equipment, gear and clothing for outdoor activities. They where established in 1957(that is the offline store of course) and according to their website they are ‘specialized in high quality performance outdoor clothing and equipment‘. “Great customer service, no sales tax, free shipping and unbeatable prices.” Well that sounds great to start with, let’s take a closer look at what they have to offer.

When you visit their website at www.USoutdoor.com, you immediately see that their product range is huge and that requires a good navigation. You can choose to navigate to the mens department, womens department or go directly to the gear shop, the brands selection or the discount outlet shop. In the men/womens department you can find all the different types of clothing you are ever going to need when you go on a outdoor activity. From Jackets and shirts to footwear and sunglasses, it’s all there. Some of the brands they sell are The North Face, Patagonia and EX Officio.

In the Gear shop you can find gear for the different outdoor activities that you maybe involved in. Some of the activities include gear for camping, climbing, bags and backpacks,hiking,wakeboarding,skiing and snowboarding and so on. If you are looking for stuff from a specific brand, you can search by brand name. I checked out the list of brand names that they sell and there are just too many brands to name in this post, so i doubt that anyone would have a lack of choice when it comes to that, all the big names are on their list.

Something you should definitely checkout every once in a while is their discount outlet store. Here you can find last seasons clothing and gear with discounts up to 60%! And you will also find the big brands in this section for a lot less then normal.
